Africa family holidays

Take the family on a next-level adventure – this is the final frontier of ‘wow’

Where else can you ride a canoe past a hippo, fall asleep to the roar of a lion, or watch a goat climb a tree? Africa trumps all other continents when it comes to wildlife experiences, and yet the safaris are only one part of the picture. Take a family holiday on this legendary continent and find yourselves sipping sweet mint tea to Berber musicians, jumping for joy with Maasai tribespeople and pondering a never-ending cinema reel of beautiful landscapes. Whether you’re unlocking your inner Indiana Jones or inner David Attenborough, Africa makes an adventurer of us all.

Why choose us

Just for families

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip.

Travel with other families

Travelling the Intrepid way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

Action packed

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Safety first

Our leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you’re well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

Sustainable travel

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.

We took our first family tour with Intrepid, and it was beyond our expectations. I was worried about dynamics with other families, and everyone meshed. I was worried about being bored on long drives in the van, and there were plenty of breaks/stops. Our guide, Omar, was AWESOME. Having a guide/tour company manage the details made the experience stress-free and relaxing for our family. Thank you Intrepid!

We have recently done an amazing family trip in Marocco with Omar Bouredda. Our tour started in Casablanca and finished in Marrakesh. First day, we were welcomed by our guide and fellow travellers. Our guide’s informative and constructive instructions provided a solid foundation for our exploration. Throughout the trip, our guide’s warmth and friendliness opened doors to many authentic experiences and enriched our knowledge about Moroccan and Berber cultures. It seemed to us that our guide has been known by many people in all the cities we visited, he was always greeted by people from all ages. He had already made good connections. This gave us a big confidence and created a difference to be with Omar. If we have not been harassed by anybody at the streets by anyone, this is due to our guide’s attitude. The Medina tour in Fez, the camel ride at Sahara desert, the visit of water irrigation systems, the 10km Atlas mountains hike on the search of nomad families, the family lunch and dinners, the tea ceremonies, the visit of Atlas movie studios and finally Marrakesh city were the highlights of our trip. We were in total 3 families, we all enjoyed the trip. Kids were from similar ages, they had a good time and built a lovely memory of the Marocco. We can easily recommend our guide, Omar, who has had exceptional rapport with our children and who kept his positive and friendly attitude from morning to evening every day. His contagious enthusiasm and genuine care ensured that every member of our family felt welcomed and valued. Without a doubt, we wholeheartedly recommend this Marocco family adventure trip to anyone seeking an unforgettable experience, made even more special by the guidance of remarkable individuals like Omar. Thank you.

I went on this trip with my two lads and they said that it was the best holiday that they have ever had. We loved the country and found the people so welcoming and friendly. It was a great mixture of city life, peaceful mountain scenery and relaxation on the Atlantic coast. So much was packed into one week and yet the pace felt relaxed and enjoyable. I hope to see some more of Morocco one day, such a beautiful country, and our guide, Mohammed Azabi, was fabulous, so gentle, kind and knowledgeable.

I highly recommend this trip. I took my 12 year old granddaughter who absolutely loved it. It helped that there were others of her own age, and some slightly older who were more than willing to join in the fun and games. We were on the move all the time (motion sickness tablets recommended if in doubt - not least for the camel ride!). A pack of cards for the evenings worked brilliantly. All in all, a wonderful experience. Bring on the next one (while she still wants to come with her old granny!)
