We just love stories like this. For two years, photographer and Instagram legend Kevin Russ lived out of his car and travelled through the American wilderness, growing an Instagram following and a very impressive beard. He moved from National Park to National Park, documenting nature with a power and clarity that would probably make Ansel Adams go ‘Yeah that’s pretty cool’…and he did it all with an iPhone.
From Mount Rainier and the North Cascades in Washington to Rocky Mountain National Park and across the border to Bahia de los Angeles in Mexico, Kevin basically lived the dream. From the beginning he made a decision to leave his DSLR and film cameras at home and shoot exclusively with an iPhone 4s (and late an iPhone 5 and 6). “I mostly get around by car,” Kevin told us, “but sometimes it’s a freight train, bus or plane. It’s a way of life now. It used to be lonely, but now I know what to expect and it feels normal. All my images on Instagram are shot with an iPhone. It’s fun and easy and I don’t need a computer to process the images.”
Ready to grow a beard and go live up a tree? Us too. You’ll need Kevin’s photo-book for inspiration.
