There’s some pretty famous road trips out there: California’s Pacific Coast Highway, Iceland’s Ring Road, Australia’s Great Ocean Road… but if you haven’t driven South Africa’s Garden Route, you haven’t seen the best of ’em.
This beautiful route – from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth – encompasses everything from white-sand beaches to mountain passes to endless vineyards. And it’s so special that it serves as the inspiration for Intrepid’s 14-day Garden Route Adventure. Though the trip encompasses wildlife aplenty (and lots of scenic camping – you have been warned!), it shows just how much more there is to South Africa than safari.
We sent pro photographer Ryan Bolton on the trip to capture some highlights. We’re talking rafting in Swellendam, a wine tour in Hermanus, a game drive in Addo Elephant National Park, and a picturesque half-day hike in Drakensburg. Oh, and bonus hikes in Lesotho, a country encircled by South Africa you’ll be very happy you didn’t leave out.
