The good travel guide: Packing essentials

written by Brodie Lancaster July 31, 2024

Joan Didion famously travelled with a mohair throw and typewriter. A breathable cotton scarf and e-reader might be more practical.

On the spectrum of packers, the uber-organised to-do-listers live at one end, and the chaos agents who grab their cleanest clothes on the way out the door are riiiight down at the other end. This guide is for the rest of us in the middle, the ones who still don’t know whether packing cubes do much and wait ’til the security queue to google ‘hold up…how many liquids can I bring?’

The no-brainers

We’re going to assume you’ve sorted out the essentials, like your passport, travel insurance, cash and prescriptions. If you’re camping or exploring, the tent pegs are your responsibility.

Tip: Stow this stuff in a zippered pouch or folder in your suitcase, so next time you pack for a trip you can grab it immediately.

Plan for activities, not just climates

Even the most go-with-the-flow traveller has a vague plan for their holiday. Are you hopping between restaurants or hiking somewhere scenic? Is your hotel close to a theatre or a must-visit go-kart track? Sketch out a plan for your days, and assign clothes to each day’s activities.

Tip: We all know hotel laundry services are a racket, but if your itinerary and budget allow for a laundromat visit mid-trip, your packing list can be cut in half.

Pack for being out all day

You don’t want a tour, experience or spontaneous adventure cut short because your phone battery is dying. Pack the power bank (and keep it juiced up), anticipate blisters and stuff some Band-Aids in your dopp kit.

Tip: A lightweight throw or scarf, umbrella, hat and sunglasses can ensure a sudden shift in weather won’t derail your whole day.

Double-duty additions

When space is at a premium, prioritise items that serve two or more purposes. Co-wash products save on shampoo and conditioner. A Turkish towel can be a cover-up or picnic blanket in a pinch. Lightweight, button-up linen pajamas can be worn loose over bathers if you’re not keen on putting on a show all the way home.

Tip: Choose a carry-on bag that fits everything you need for the airport – and is something you can tote around on your trip as well.

The final word on packing cubes

They really do work.

Tip: Invest in a set and pack all the components of an outfit in each individual one cube. Thank us later.

Don’t take our word for it. Find a small group adventure worthy of those packing cubes.
