written by Sahar Aman December 4, 2024

Intrepid’s new Africa trips connect travellers with nature and communities in unforgettable ways.

Home to 54 countries and more than 1.5 billion people, it’s fair to say Africa is BIG. With this batch of brand-new trips and experiences, Intrepid are on hand to help you see the best of this vast continent in 2025.

Think night safaris under the stars, hikes to hidden villages and meeting people who are passionate about protecting wildlife. Choose from completely new trips in West Africa or opt for fresh new activities in top Intrepid destinations such as Morocco and South Africa.

1. Explore Morocco’s highlights one step at a time

Walk through ancient souks and medinas and desert landscapes on Intrepid’s new Morocco Highlights trip. This 10-day adventure takes you through lively cities such as Marrakech and Casablanca and then on to the Sahara and Amazigh villages. On a new activity in the Dades Valley you’ll hike through rock formations, fields and villages, then enjoy a home-cooked lunch with a local family, learning about their daily life and traditions. This experience blends culture and connection in Morocco’s stunning landscapes.

2. Dive into West Africa with a trip to Benin, Togo and Ghana

Go all out with this new trip to three new Intrepid destinations. If you live for offbeat adventures, this 15-day journey from Benin to Ghana is your ticket. You’ll switch from hiking Mt Agou (Togo’s highest peak) to meeting artisans who create fantasy coffins in Ghana’s capital, Accra. You’ll also learn about Benin’s past by visiting Route des Esclaves, a UNESCO-funded memorial that marks the path enslaved people walked from Ouidah to the Door of No Return.

3. Glam trip along Cape Town and the Garden Route

You can now visit the stunning coastal region of South Africa in style, thanks to Intrepid’s latest Premium adventure. On this swanky road trip, you’ll hop along the coast for nine days, visiting bays and beaches, stopping off for farm-to-table meals, cooking classes and, of course, wine. One of the top experiences of this trip is a two-night Feature Stay in the heart of Franschhoek Valley and the Cape Winelands at a spa hotel surrounded by mountains.

4. Go beyond the Big Five in East Africa

Intrepid has added a new Comfort trip to its repertoire of East Africa adventures. This slower-paced 13-day experience with hand-picked accommodation explores some of Kenya and Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife destinations: Masai Mara, Amboseli National Park, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Along with spotting the Big Five, you’ll have a chance to climb Mt Meru (Tanzania’s second-highest peak) and see the work of Intrepid Foundation partner Patinaai Osim. This project supports Indigenous Masai women and girls with work opportunities and training.

5. Experience the power of community in South Africa

The South Africa Family Safari with Teenagers now includes a new immersive experience: a homestay in the village of Phiring. During your time here, you will be hosted by a local family and take part in traditional activities such as floor-making, cooking and dancing, as well as exploring the scenic mountain trails nearby. This cultural exchange gives young travellers a chance to expand their outlook and understand community values not always found in the Global North.

6. Sway with the sea breeze in Senegal and The Gambia

Senegal and The Gambia are known for their rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes (from baobab-dotted savannahs to beaches, wetlands and forests) – and you can explore it all on a new trip. Catch live jazz in World Heritage-listed Saint Louis – a coastal city with deep roots in this musical genre – and spot some of the 1.5 million migratory birds that pass through Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary. You’ll also visit the Saint Joseph Adult Education and Skill Centre, where disadvantaged women learn sewing, crafts and tie-dye skills.

7. Uncover nocturnal wonders in Southern Africa

Go on a wildlife-packed adventure on the new Southern Africa Safari. This trip offers two experiences not found on other Intrepid itineraries. You’ll wander the ruins of an Iron Age fort in Mapungubwe National Park, a World Heritage site that offers a glimpse into Southern Africa’s early civilisations. In the evening, you’ll head out on a night safari in the Mapesu Private Game Reserve, spotting nocturnal creatures under the stars.

8. Meet the rangers protecting Serengeti wildlife

The Serengeti Trail trip now features a visit to the Kimana Ranger Project. This initiative, near Amboseli National Park, focuses on wildlife conservation and community-led efforts to protect elephants and other endangered species. Meet the dedicated rangers, learn about their daily challenges and gain insight into how they combat poaching and facilitate coexistence between wildlife and local communities. This hands-on experience offers a deeper understanding of conservation in action, adding a meaningful layer to your travels to this destination.

Revel in the bazaar

Marrakech is synonymous with sensory overload. But if you slow down and tune in to the everyday rhythm of local life – often found in the souks of the labyrinthine medina and the city’s vibrant main square – a distinctly Moroccan beat emerges.
