9 different ways to see the United States and Canada

written by Stefan Prince December 1, 2024

Switch up how you explore the United States and Canada with these all-new trips and experiences.

To put it mildly, if you can dream up an adventure, you can do it in North America. So, it’s no surprise that there’s a whole new set of Intrepid trips and experiences for you to find across the United States and Canada. Want to experience the sky-high wonders of the West Coast? The old stories waiting to be told in Newfoundland? Or how about an all-encompassing adventure through a bit of it all? Intrepid’s got you covered.

1. Go all-in on Alaska’s natural wonders

Alaska’s always attracted avid adventurers, and now on Intrepid’s new eight-day Hiking the Great Land of Alaska, you can get even closer to the action. Not only will you kayak along Homer’s impressive coastal scenery and stay right in among it all as you set up camp each night in Alaska‘s varied landscapes, you’ll also hike through forests of alder and cottonwoods to the Harding Icefield, seeing the ice stretch toward the horizon while hearing about the impacts of climate change in the region.

2. Witness the woody wildernesses of the West Coast

Calling all foliage fanatics! A new 15-day trip, West Coast Discovery, might just be your ticket. The trip combines Best of California’s National Parks and San Francisco to Seattle, taking you through the towering timber of Sequoia and Redwood national parks and into the mossy magic of Hoh Rainforest. Along the way, there are plenty more incredible landscapes to explore – think Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, and Columbia River Gorge in Washington.

3. Wind your way along the Western USA

Want all that and then some? No problem. Western USA Encompassed, a new 20-day trip, takes everything in West Coast Discovery and tacks Western USA National Parks Loop onto the beginning, so you can kick off your American adventures with some hiking in the red canyon country of Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon national parks. From there, Intrepid’s most comprehensive trip in the Western US takes you among California’s sky-high sequoias and into Yosemite National Park for a night of stargazing with a naturalist guide. With stops at some of the West Coast’s most iconic cities – Vegas, San Fran, Portland and Seattle – mixed in, no stone’s left unturned.

4. Make way for wildlife in the Canadian Rockies

Craggy rock faces, thick forests, picturesque lakes… it’s tough to think about how the Rockies could possibly be improved. But, as an all-new experience on Intrepid’s 10-day Grand Canadian Rockies will teach travellers, there are efforts underway to do exactly that. In Banff, you’ll meet a conservationist from Yukon to Yellowstone – an initiative working to protect wildlife corridors spanning the US-Canada border, allowing grizzly bears, caribou, wolves and more to follow their natural routes.

5. Dive into the Wild West in Deadwood, South Dakota

Fans of a hootin’ and hollerin’ good time will love a new stop along the trail of Intrepid’s seven-day South Dakota to Yellowstone Parks Explorer trip. After spending time at Badlands National Park, travellers will stop in the town of Deadwood, South Dakota. Made famous for playing host to Wild West names like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok, the town’s many Gold Rush-era buildings are preserved to this day. Your leader will take you on an orientation walk, and then you’ll have free time to do some exploring of your own – why not get fitted out in a new cowboy hat?

6. Find a warm welcome waiting in Newfoundland

Gander’s got a good yarn to share, and a new stop on Intrepid’s eight-day Newfoundland Adventure: Westbound (or Eastbound) will let you hear it. There, in Canada’s easternmost province, you’ll meet with a local to learn about how the unassuming town managed the arrival around 6600 people who were diverted there when all of North America’s airspace closed on 9/11. Hear what went into hosting those numbers, as well as the lasting impact it’s had on the town. You’ll also head further back in history during a walking tour of the fishing town of Trinity, where you’ll hear about its Indigenous Beothuk people, as well as its French, Irish and English influences.

7. Gear up to get out on an Alaskan glacier

Getting active in Alaska’s already a guaranteed good time – and it just got even better. On the seven-day Alaska Hike, Bike & Kayak, along with paddling the pristine waters of Resurrection Bay and taking on the trails of Denali National Park, travellers now also get the chance to explore Matanuska Glacier on foot. Don your ice cleats and helmet and get to seeing some of the 27-mile-long and 4-mile-wide glacier with the help of an Alaskan guide and glacier expert.

8. Settle in for a story with a view in the Rockies

Members of the 18 to 35s crowd can get a perfect introduction to Canada’s iconic mountain ranges on Intrepid’s 13-day Real Canadian Rockies. In between tackling paths that coil around mountains and snake through inland rainforests, a new experience will get you hearing the stories behind the scenery. After spending the night in Golden, you’ll make a visit to Rocky Mountain Buffalo Ranch for a tour with its owner. You’ll get to learn about the history of the area and buffalo behaviours as you watch the incredible animals roam pastures backdropped by mountains.

9. Go back to the Gilded Age in Asheville, North Carolina

If MTV Cribs had been around in 1895, Biltmore would have made top billing. With 250 rooms set in a 3237-hectare (8000-acre) estate, it is the largest privately owned house in the USA. A tour of the chateauesque mansion is now included on the Georgia History Trail to Nashville trip, so you can snoop around the celeb-worthy property in person. You’ll have a free afternoon to continue exploring the sprawling estate, and there’s lots more to see and do – from hiking or cycling along the French Broad River to tasting locally-made tipples at the on-site winery.

Marrakech is synonymous with sensory overload. But if you slow down and tune in to the everyday rhythm of local life – often found in the souks of the labyrinthine medina and the city’s vibrant main square – a distinctly Moroccan beat emerges.
