We’re in the process of figuring out how much CO2-e this trip generates. In the meantime, find out more about our climate commitments and carbon reduction target.

Why you'll love this trip
  • Witness a spectacular pink and yellow sunset behind towering, 800-year-old trees along the Avenue of the Baobabs in the laid-back seaside town of Morondava.
  • Travel along the Tsiribihina River in a traditional barge, stopping to hike to hidden waterfalls, explore remote villages and camp among nature on the banks.
  • Trek through a forest of limestone karsts and cross a sheer drop on a suspended bridge at the Great Tsingy, keeping an eye out for native wildlife including 11 species of lemur.
  • Float down the meandering Manambolo River in a traditional dugout canoe, wind through a deep gorge and past rocky cliffs, soaking up the tranquil atmosphere.
  • Discover the emerald-green waters of Tritiva, an extinct crater surrounded by verdant forest, on a hike through the stunning Antsirabe district.

Is this trip right for you?
  • The visible vertical drop at the Great Tsingy is an incredible sight, however it can be quite intimidating especially for those with vertigo. If you have concerns, please discuss these with your leader once the trip commences.
  • Some of the best scenery in Madagascar is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities.
  • This trip includes river cruising on the Tsiribihina River. Camping conditions are basic along the way and there will be no access to bathroom facilities, however this means you have access to more remote parts of the region and the joy of experiencing the elements.
  • As this is a remote part of Madagascar there will be some very long travel days, but we think the unique and rewarding experiences are worth the distances travelled. Due to the conditions of the roads and the impact of little maintenance during the pandemic travel can be slow so a little patience can go a long way.

Overall you see some great things on this trip, but it is not something for those who like to maximise their day. Most of the trip is driving endlessly, and often limited time at the actual location given logistics. Accommodation mostly good, especially the boat / camping aspect, but some hotels clearly not up to standard. The trip information is largely inaccurate - you need sleep sheets not bags, you do not need as much money as they suggest. Beautiful country, but not a trip for those whose time off is precious

This is quite a full-on trip with a lot of travelling. But it was worth it, I really enjoyed it.

What an eye-opening experience this was! I learnt so much about Madagascar and had the best group who made the experience so wonderful. Our leader worked so hard to ensure we didn’t miss out on anything but you are certainly at the mercy of many uncontrollable factors (eg. Ferry crossings, long drives, group members taking their time, etc). As mentioned in the notes, be prepared for a lot of driving! That’s the killer but the rest of the trip was fantastic. If you want to see Madagascar, a group tour is the way to go and this one was wonderful. Highlights - the Tsingy climb, camping on the sand banks and the avenue of baobabs! Shout out to Barnabas as well, he was an awesome leader!

Long uncomfortable travel days. They needed more lounge chairs on the river cruise. The crew and the welcoming, friendly population were what I liked best. I thought there would be more lemurs and baobab trees.
