Why you'll love this trip
  • Explore the Serengeti National Park in depth with multiple game drives through this spectacular wildlife arena. Here, you’ll have the best chance to spot the Big Five!
  • Embark on an unforgettable safari across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in an open roof 4WD with your small group for a chance to see the endangered black rhinoceros in full view.
  • Learn about the Maasai cultures and join a local community for a guided afternoon stroll around the farming area of Mto wa Mbu, before sitting down for a traditional meal together.
  • Explore Amboseli National Park – home to the largest population of African elephants in Kenya and known for large tuskers and exquisite views of Mt Kilimanjaro on clear days.
  • Your expert local crew will keep you well informed (and well fed!) – filling you in on all you need to know about the Great Rift Valley and the annual migration of some two million wildebeest.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Patinaai Osim Community Care Organisation. Donations support their livelihood programs which help indigenous Maasai women identify alternative income-generating activities to support their families.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent (unless you’re on an Original or Comfort style trip), occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland
  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
  • Some passengers will have been travelling together prior to the start of this trip. You may also want to check out The Masai Heartlands if you have more time to explore in East Africa.

The Serengeti Trail was a long and hard trip, but definitely worth the views! Be mindful that during this time, it is very dry but this in addition to the Kenya Wildlife Safari was a great combination of an almost guarantee of the Big Five in a two week period. Like any other trip, it is what you make it and I wish we had a better guide to really feel welcome and inviting when we arrive to Tanzania but our group was so great and made everything worthwhile!

The trip was amazing. However, after the visiting the Masai Mara on the Kenya wildlife safari leg just before during this time of year, August, made the Serengeti was a little underwhelming. The drive to the Serengeti was very long and the road was very bumpy, but the scenery on the park was beautiful and the animals were amazing. The Ngorongoro crater was also really cool.

Good trip, saw tons of animals! Be warned you'll spend a TON of time in your car. The provided mattresses are terrible, bring your own. There are several absurdly early mornings (4 AM) even when not needed to see animals. If you are vegetarian, be warned that the meals are often low in protein, bring/buy good snacks to supplement. Would NOT recommend doing with Kili as a follow on, it's a great trip but won't leave you in the best shape for a demanding hike.
