Safety Updates

The safety of our passengers, leaders and operators is a major priority of Intrepid. With this in mind we monitor world events very closely. Intrepid makes operational decisions based on informed advice from a number of sources...

  • The level of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) travel advisory. If this advisory is at Level 5 'Do Not Travel' then Intrepid will either cancel a trip or reroute the itinerary to avoid the areas concerned.
  • With over 400 leaders on the ground in operational destinations and subsidiary companies in our main hub cities, Intrepid has access to a up to the minute flow of information as to the mood and feelings within the countries we work in.
  • We are also in regular contact with the various operators we use. Their in depth knowledge and understanding of their various areas is vital.
  • Other Government travel advisories...
  • World Health Organisation

Algeria (22 August 08)

In recent days Algeria has suffered several bomb attacks including car bombs and suicide bombs, resulting in some fatalities. The incidents occurred in the town of Bouira which is approx. 120 kms east of Algiers.

Intrepid has 2 scheduled departures that will include Algeria in the itinerary:

~ Across the Sahara (ESP) departing 30th September (due to enter Algeria on 21st October)
~ Across the Sahara (ESP) departing 4th November (due to enter Algeria on 25th November)

Our itinerary does not go to this town however there is a planned 2 night stop in Algiers.

We are closely monitoring the Australian Government travel advisory (DFAT) and will make any necessary changes to re-route the itinerary in the even the situation worsens or if the travel advisory is upgraded. Due to the last minute nature of safety risks from terrorist attacks, it may be possible that the changes are put into effect during the trip and we will not be able to confirm changes to our travellers prior to departure.

If there is a travel advisory upgrade for the entire country of Algeria, we will alter the itinerary to fly direct from Tunis to Casablanca to ensure the safety of our passengers and ground staff. The trip will end on arrival into Casablanca.

If the travel advisory is upgraded only for the region of Bouira and Algiers, we will fly direct from Tamanrasset in southern Algieria, via Algiers, to Casablanca.

At this stage, we are not planning to alter the itinerary however we are closely monitoring government advice and will also be working with out local partners in Algeria to give us their advice and local knowledge on the safety situation.

Please regularly refer to this safety page for further updates.

Galapagos (28 July 08)

We are excited to announce that Intrepid has now secured the services of the Archipel I to operate our Galapagos boat-based trips from 24 September 2008 until the end of 2008.

We have also contracted the M/S Guantanamera to operate Intrepid's Galapagos boat-based trips for all of our 2009 departures.

The Archipel I is a first class catamaran that sleeps 16 passengers. There are 6 twin and 2 double cabins all with outside views and each cabin has private facilities. A dining room and resting area are also provided. The itinerary remains the same as advertised in 2008 brochures.

All travellers booked and confirmed on Intrepid trips starting the Galapagos portion of the trip from 24 September 2007 onwards have been automatically confirmed on the new boat.

Please note, as per our standard safety policies and procedures, Intrepid staff have completed an extensive safety check on both the Archipel I and the M/S Guantanamera and are more than satisfied that both vessels meet our stringent guidelines.

Should you require further information please don't hesitate to contact us or your booking agent.
