Bruny Island has a cool temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and sunny, winters are cool and wet, and autumn and spring are mild with moderate rain. While Bruny Island is a year-round destination with something special on offer each season, we've put together a guide to help you plan your trip.
Spring (September-November)
Spring brings warmer daytime temperatures of 15°C to 17°C. Nights can still be chilly with lows of 7°C, so don't forget a jumper and a jacket. September and October can be quite wet with an average of 12 days of rainfall on average, but this drops to nine days come November. However, rainfall is often brief, so when it does rain, chances are you won't be out of action for too long.
Summer (December-February)
Summer on Bruny Island is fairly mild with average highs of 19°C to 20°C and lows of 12°C. Rainfall is at its lowest in the summer and extended daylight hours give you plenty of time to explore. The UV Index rating can be high, so make sure you're properly protected with sunscreen and a hat when outside.
The water temperature in Tasmania is on the cooler side than some other parts of Australia, but it peaks in February with an average of 14°C to 19°C.
Autumn (March-May)
Daytime highs linger at 19°C in March, but drop down to 14°C by May. Evenings can be on the chilly side with lows of 9°C. Autumn is one of the best seasons for sampling cool climate wines and indulging in Pacific oysters.
March is also the last month to swim in the sea before the water temperature starts to drop. However, you may still want to wear a wetsuit depending on your tolerance for cold water!
Autumn is an extra gorgeous time of year on the mainland, with opportunities to see Tasmania's famous Fagus tree turn from green to red and yellow. Locals call this annual event 'the turning of the fagus'.
Winter (June-August)
Winter temperatures on Bruny Island are brisk and it can be quite windy. July is the coldest month with average highs of 13°C and lows of 6°C, while August is the wettest with 13 days of rain on average. Be sure to pack plenty of layers, as well as wind and waterproof clothing to keep your body warm when exploring.
June and July also get fewer hours of daylight, so it's best to set off early in the morning so that you're not caught on a hiking trail in the dark.
