Byron Bay has a humid subtropical climate with long, warm and occasionally wet summers and short, mild winters. Its proximity to the tropics means it can be quite humid, lingering at around 70%.
Summer (December to February) is the most popular time to visit Byron Bay, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best time to visit. Yes, the weather is hot, but the beaches are often crowded and accommodation prices increase.
To dodge the crowds, we consider the shoulder months of March, April, October and November to offer a balance of good weather and smaller crowds. The weather is sunny and warm (but not too hot), and the water temperature is mild enough for swimming without a wetsuit.
That's not to say you can't enjoy Byron Bay in the peak of summer or winter, because you definitely can! Byron Bay is a year-round destination with plenty to do in all weather conditions. Be sure to follow the weather forecast so you can adjust your itinerary accordingly.
Spring (September-November)
Best for: whale watching, smaller crowds and warm weather
The arrival of spring brings more travellers to Byron Bay, and who could blame them? Daylight savings begins, temperatures are on the rise and rainfall is low. Spring is also peak time for whale watching. You can spot them off the coast until November, or get closer on a boat tour.
Other springtime activities include surfing, hiking and beach hopping. You'll also get to shop and dine without rubbing shoulders with too many tourists.
Summer (December-February)
Best for: enjoying the beaches, swimming and a lively atmosphere
There's a reason why summer in Byron Bay is the most popular time to visit. With an average high of around 27°C to 29°C, the weather is ideal for embracing the relaxed beach lifestyle the town is famous for. The sea also averages a balmy 25°C. Just be mindful of heat stroke and sunburn (the sun in Australia is intense) and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Surprisingly, there's a fair bit of rainfall in the summer, but it usually comes in the form of afternoon or evening showers so you can get back outside in no time.
Autumn (March-May)
Best for: a winning combination of warm weather and smaller crowds
Like spring, autumn is one of the best times to visit Byron Bay. Warm temperatures linger well into April, with average highs of 27°C in March and 22°C in May. Pair this with warm ocean temperatures and you've got yourself the perfect beach holiday (minus the large crowds that summer brings).
Winter (June-August)
Best for: smaller crowds, winter sunshine and whale watching
Even though winter is the coldest season in Byron Bay, daily highs sit at 20°C, allowing you to spend most of your time outside. The skies are also pretty clear, so you can sunbake on the beach (just bring a jumper in case the temperature drops).
One of the only negatives about visiting during the winter is that the water temperature drops, so you might need a wetsuit if you plan on swimming or surfing.
Whales can be spotted from May to November during their annual migration, with opportunities to see these majestic creatures in action on a kayaking or boat tour, or from the coastal headlands.
