Intrepid Travel partners with Homeward Bound to sponsor leadership scholarships for women in STEMM

February 2025

Intrepid has partnered with Homeward Bound to support women and non-binary STEMM leaders who are shaping a more sustainable future for the planet.

Intrepid is sponsoring three scholarships to remove financial barriers.

Participants will refine their leadership skills on an immersive Tanzania expedition at the end of the program. Applications close March 21, 2025.

Intrepid Travel has announced a new partnership with Homeward Bound, a global transformational leadership initiative dedicated to supporting and inspiring women and non-binary people in STEMM to take action in tackling sustainability issues around the world.

The initiative involves a 12-month online program combining leadership coaching, strategy development, and visibility enhancement, all while providing access to a powerful network of global peers. At the end of the program, Homeward Bound’s cohort will have the opportunity to participate in an immersive expedition in Tanzania, designed to reinforce their learning through real-world experiences.

The new partnership sees Intrepid sponsoring three fully funded scholarships in the 2025 program.

Yvette Thompson, General Manager of ANZ at Intrepid Travel, says as a purpose-led B Corp and leader in responsible travel, Intrepid Travel is proud to invest in this transformational program.

“By removing financial barriers, we want to support women and non-binary people who may have faced financial constraints to apply and seize this opportunity to lead, grow and shape the sustainable future of our planet,” Thompson says.

“We’re especially mindful of ensuring that participants from developing countries and First Nations communities have access to this funding.”

Sarah Derry, CEO of Homeward Bound, says: “Intrepid’s commitment to sustainability and inclusion perfectly aligns with our mission to develop future leaders. This partnership will amplify our global network and bring diverse voices to the forefront. The post program expedition to Tanzania has been tailored by Intrepid Travel to connect the participants with the region’s people, culture, breathtaking biodiversity and iconic conservation areas such as the Serengeti.

“Tanzania provides an awe-inspiring setting for this immersive experience, where participants can deepen their leadership skills and connect with a global network of changemakers” says Derry.

“Intrepid’s generous funding allows even more diverse voices into our global network, making this transformational experience more inclusive, accessible and gives women the courage to step forward as the bold, visionary leaders the world urgently needs.”

Dr. Susanne Etti, Intrepid’s Global Environmental Impact Manager, says:

“The climate crisis disproportionately impacts women, so diversifying the voices at the decision-making table will only improve outcomes for all.

“It’s essential to support women in leadership roles, particularly with backgrounds in STEMM, where there’s still a need for greater representation. This partnership with Homeward Bound directly supports a new generation of leaders, empowering them to thrive and drive positive change,” Dr Etti says.

Applications are open until 21 March 2025 to all women and non-binary individuals with backgrounds in STEMM globally, with a strong encouragement for Indigenous, People of Color and members from marginalised communities to apply.
