Do I need a visa to travel to New Zealand?

If you are from a visa waiver country or territory and are coming to New Zealand for less than 3 months (or 6 months if you are a British citizen), you do not need a visa. Instead, if you are eligible, you will need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA).

You do not need an NZeTA if you are an Australian citizen travelling with an Australian passport, a citizen of New Zealand travelling on a New Zealand passport or if you are travelling on a foreign passport that has New Zealand citizen endorsement.

The NZeTA allows you to stay for 3 months (6 for British citizens) and is valid for up to 2 years and multiple visits while valid. During this time, you can holiday, visit loved ones, shop and explore New Zealand as a visitor. With an NZeTA, you may also bring your family if they meet certain criteria, or study for a short time.

NZeTA eligibility and requirements

If you are a citizen from a visa waiver country with a passport that is valid for at least three months longer than your expected departure date, you will need to request an NZeTA. Visa waiver countries include Canada, The United Kingdom and The United States of America (including USA nationals). See the full list of visa waiver countries.

Alongside entry to New Zealand for up to three months, the NZeTA also means that you can pass through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger on the way to or from Australia. You can also pass through Auckland International Airport if you are on the way to another country (if you are from a visa waiver or transit waiver country).

If you are already in New Zealand and wish to extend your stay, you will need to apply for a visa.

NZeTA fees

If you are from a visa waiver country, you will be able to request an NZeTA through the online portal or free app. You will need to request an NZeTA before you travel. Take note that processing times may take around 72 hours.

When completed online, the NZeTA will cost NZD $23 and when requested through the app, it will be NZD $17.

Please note that you are also required to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). This IVL helps to fund tourism to New Zealand and also goes towards protecting the natural environment. The IVL costs NZD $35 and will be paid at the same time as the NZeTA request.
