You’ll find plenty of country charm in the Scenic Rim in Queensland, a picturesque rural area located in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, a few hours drive south of Brisbane. Stalls selling everything from local avocados to freshly cut roses line the grassy roadside and everything is impossibly green. Narrow switchbacks offer plenty of thrills on the way up the mountain to World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park. At the top of the range near the historic O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, you’ll find brilliantly coloured parrots in every colour of the rainbow, a free tree top canopy walk and well-signed trails winding through the rainforest. There are plenty of other things to do in the Scenic Rim as well. Raise a glass at Scenic Rim wineries, check out some of the best Scenic Rim restaurants, stroll along the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, or take in the view at Mt Barney National Park. Scenic Rim weather can get chilly in winter, making this the perfect time to hike the National Park and enjoy a glass of wine in front of a toasty warm fire.

Visit Albert River Wines, a pretty boutique winery housed in a grand old homestead or head to Canungra Valley Vineyards, another lovely spot just up the road from the main township, before you take the winding road to Lamington National Park.

See Cedar Creek Falls
Stroll above the trees on an elevated walkway at the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, which has a 30-metre-high cantilever bridge soaring above the rainforest, or admire the gorge, waterfalls and rock pools on a walk to Cedar Creek Falls.

Explore Green Mountain
On top of Green Mountain, near the historic O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, you will find parrots in every colour of the rainbow and a free tree top walk which takes you high into the rainforest canopy where you can surround yourself with nature.

Scenic Rim was my fourth trip with Intrepid and was well organised with an excellent tour leader. Intrepid tours attract a great bunch of people (of all ages) which makes all the difference, and excellent for single people like myself. Experienced beautiful scenery and some stunning accommodation. Note their accommodation is of a wide style and does not meet the standard 4 star look and range of facilities; therein lies it charm.

The scenic rim trip was fantastic. The hikes were really good and generally not too challenging (except for my dodgy knee!). The Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony was great. We visited a couple of local wineries and had dinner at 3 different country pubs which was fun. Mt Barney Lodge was a beautiful old building full of history. The guide Jonny was well organised and very knowledgeable, and the group were all good company and supportive. I'd definitely recommend this trip.
