Long trips & tours in Africa

Africa is one of the only places you can truly travel far and wide.

Each continent is unique, but Africa breaks the mould. Wildlife ranges from the smallest meerkats to the biggest elephants and landscapes are dotted with monuments left behind by Sahara merchants and the Ancient Egyptians. Add in vistas like the Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls or the baobab-lined streets of Madagascar and residents like the Masai Warriors or the all-female anti-poaching team, The Black Mambas, and you’ve got only the smallest snippet of why Africa is not to be missed.

A baby mountain gorilla resting on itts mother's feet looks at the camera
Mountain gorillas, Rwanda

Sadly, there are only two places left where you can still see mountain gorillas in the wild. Rwanda’s Volcano National Park is one of them. Our expert guides will lead you through the jungle where you'll watch these critically endangered creatures in their natural habitat. Trust us: David Attenborough has not prepared you for this.

The great Victoria Falls near Livingstone in Zimbabwe, with a rainbow at dusk
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

There’s something that takes your breath away about a waterfall, and with one clocking in at 108 metres, it’ll leave an impression. Victoria Falls, situated at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, is almost twice the width of Niagara Falls. The local word for it translates to “the smoke that thunders,” so you can imagine it’s quite the site.

Travellers posing for a photo with Abu Simbel in the background
Abu Simbel, Egypt

Put yourself in Swiss explorer Jean-Louis Burckhardt’s shoes. It’s 1813 and you’re trekking the sands near the Egyptian border with old Nubia; suddenly, you turn a corner and – bam! Four colossal statues staring out over the desert. Today, Abu Simbel is one of Egypt’s premier attractions. You could go overland to get there, but it’s way more fun to float down the Nile in a traditional Egyptian felucca.

Vic Falls to Zanzibar

Whilst the staff, organisation and overall experience is of the quality we have come to expect from intrepid, it is very difficult to recommend this trip (on it's own at least, it may make more sense as part of the Cape Town to Nairobi trip) due to the itinerary. It is too rushed and the vast majority of the trip is spent travelling. We made some fantastic memories on the activities that I know will stay with us forever and the memories of the the punishing travel are already fading into the background, but during the trip itself it felt like endless driving punctuated by the occasional days of activity.

Cape Town to Vic Falls

Great 1st leg of a 4 leg trip. The animals and landscapes were absolutely amazing. Paul could not be a better guide. The trip was made a bit complicated by multiple unusual breakdowns which were handled a bit poorly by Intrepid. I would still go on another Intrepid guided tour. The crew was great. The locations were fantastic, except 1. Thank you.

Cape Town to Vic Falls

Crew members are great, one of the best parts of the trip. The itinerary is decent enough for a basic trip, but dont expect to be physically active. The organisation and preparation of Intrepid as a company is lacking in certain key fields however.

As a solo traveller who had never done a group tour before, I am so glad I chose Intrepid! A group of like minded people exploring the most amazing places together.
