Why you'll love this trip
  • Spend a day trekking (and perhaps a second day, if you choose) through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to get close to Uganda's rare mountain gorillas for an unforgettable hour – a one-day gorilla trekking permit is included in this trip.
  • Wake up to spectacular views of the forest canopy during your three-night stay at your Feature Stay – the Gorilla Heights Lodge in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
  • Join an intimate fireside chat with a field veterinarian from The Gorilla Doctors and discover how they are saving the species, one gorilla patient at a time.
  • Take a closer look at Rwanda’s history and the resilience of its people during a two-night stay at Kigali’s Hotel des Mille Collines, which famously sheltered more than 1000 people during the Genocide.
  • Sit down to dinner with a local park ranger, learning about life in the wilderness and their special relationships with the mountain gorillas.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Gorilla Doctors. Donations help them care for injured mountain and Grauer's gorillas – contributing to the long-term sustainability of gorilla populations.

Is this trip right for you?
  • Tracking gorillas in the dense forest can sometimes be wet, humid, muddy and uncomfortable. The terrain is by no means easy either, so it can be pretty strenuous walking. You need to be prepared and fit enough to walk up to 4 hours up and down hills (perhaps pack some gardening gloves to assist in any up-hill climbs). But the sheer thrill of coming across a habituated group of gorillas, dominated by a great male silverback, more than outweighs any difficulty.
  • The gorilla trek is a shared activity. You may be split into different groups according to fitness level, and be accompanied by other travellers on your trek. However there will only be a maximum of 8 people per gorilla family, plus a local Uganda Wildlife Ranger and trackers.

This trip was at a very relaxed pace. Food was really good (although mostly US/European food which was disappointing for me). The prime activity, gorilla trekking was a lot of fun. We were assigned the easiest gorilla family and yet ended up hiking the second longest amount of time because the family was constantly on the move. It can work out that way! I did this trip as a way to relax and rest following my Kilimanjaro climb, it was a great way to chill out!

I had a very nice time on the Uganda/Rwanda trip. Trekking to see gorillas in the wild was a really beautiful experience. It can be unpredictable though, our gorilla group was on the move and we ended up hiking up and down steep hills from 9a-4p which is unusually long. The hotels were both stunning and relaxing. I did the Batwa experience rather than a second trekking tour and enjoyed learning the history of the Batwa which was educational.

This was a major "bucket list" trip for me and Intrepid delivered as promised. The leaders/guides Eric and Prim were amazing and the two hotels are very different but fabulous. Rwanda's tragic history and remarkable Renaissance are truly intriguing and inspiring. The gorilla experience in Uganda is beyond amazing. The trek is grueling but don't be deterred. As the slowest and probably oldest in my group, I hired a porter and made it on my own two feet.

This trip was amazing! If you’re only after gorillas - tick. If you’re wanting to learn about Rwanda genocide - tick. If you want to immerse yourself in culture and nature in East Africa - double tick! This is for you! You will be taken care of - it’s safe and you will have beautiful and positive lasting memories!

This is my third Intepid trip and I have never been disappointed. The attention to detail and the inclusion of local knowledge and culture is way better than doing it on your own or booking with any other organization.
