Choosing your trip
Our four styles of travel – Basix, Original, Comfort and Premium – cover a whole gamut of travel experiences. To find out which one has ‘You’ written all over it, visit our trip styles page.
Want to lie in a hammock and not move until cocktail hour? We’ve got a trip for that. Hiking and trekking more your speed? We’ve got trips for that. To determine what type of trip suits you best, each of our trips comes with a Physical Rating between 1 and 5 to let you know how physically demanding the itinerary will be.
Intrepid offers a wide range of family friendly adventures around the globe.
Most of our family trips have a minimum age of 5 to ensure that the included activities suit the whole family. Occasionally, some destinations will have a higher minimum age depending on the physical demands of the itinerary. Check the Essential Trip Information for minimum age requirements on each trip.
Intrepid travelers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and many elect to travel solo. Our small groups are a mix of genders and ages between 18 and 70, with like-minded travelers from all over the world.
Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes to a minimum. Small groups allow us to remain flexible with itineraries, use public transportation wherever we can and visit communities without intimidating the locals.
Most Intrepid trips run with an intimate group of 12-16 travelers, though they usually average around 10 people.
Our overland trips use purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed in the description of each trip.
For the majority of our trips (excluding family trips), the minimum age for travelers is 15. An adult must accompany all children under 18.
Our overland trips have a minimum age of 18.
Kiddos younger than 15 can join us on our family trips and Short Break Adventures, but make sure to check each trip for its minimum age.
Most trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a self-assessment form is required for all travelers 70 years and over.
While we can’t tell you who your leader is prior to departure, we can tell you they will be awesome.
Our leaders are experts in their regions, some because they’ve been traveling there for years, others because they’re local to the region and can’t wait to show you around. On longer journeys, or ones that travel through multiple countries, you may change leaders part way through – but this just means double the awesomeness.
While our itineraries are designed to include one-of-a-kind experiences up until the final day, we do understand that sometimes things don't go as planned.
Although you won’t be reimbursed for any portion of the trip unused, you can opt to sign off the trip if you need to leave early. If you’ll be arriving late or need to leave before the trip ends, let us know in advance and we will notify our team on the ground to best accommodate you.
Please make sure you are happy with the itinerary of your chosen trip before booking. We are unable to make changes for individual travelers.
If you have a group of friends, colleagues or even a school group that would like its own personally designed itinerary, get in contact with our very talented Tailor-Made team, and they can tailor an itinerary just for you.
Once the trip is underway, all accommodation and transport are included. But if you want to arrive at your destination a little early to explore or stick around post-trip, we can help you there. Contact us for more info on extra hotel nights and airport transfers.
Absolutely! The beauty of the Intrepid style of travel is that many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.
Rooming on all Intrepid trips is organised on a twin-share basis. We pair solo travellers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. If you'd like your own space, you can also pay for an individual room.
As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.
On a small selection of itineraries, some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis (for example, on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances, it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information prior to booking and traveling.
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. Please carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips, you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.
Where we can, we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical, we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact us for further information on any of our itineraries.
We know that many of our travelers are part of the LGBTQIA+ community and our goal is that everyone feel comfortable when they travel with us.
Travelers should be aware of the local laws and customs in the destinations we visit, as some countries have laws that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ people. We recommend you visit Equaldex and/or Smartraveller before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQIA+-related laws.
We pair solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender, according to your passport or the information in our booking system. If you identify differently from the gender marker on your passport, please contact us to let us know in advance. We have single supplements available on most trips for travelers who prefer to have their own room.
We don’t tolerate any form of discrimination, violence (verbal or physical) or sexual harassment, either between travellers or involving our leaders, partners or local people. If you feel that someone is behaving inappropriately while traveling with us, please inform your tour leader or local guide immediately. Alternatively, contact us on the emergency contact number detailed in the Problems and Emergency Contact section of your Essential Trip Information.
Most trips have individual rooms available. You can request a single supplement at the time of booking.
Depending on the trip style you choose, you may be able to request a triple room at the time of booking. We will do our best, but room requests can’t be guaranteed.
If you happen to be the only solo person of your gender on the trip, you may be given your own room. We can’t guarantee this will be the case as we may have travelers book trips last minute.
If you’re traveling with a partner, just let us know you want to share a room (and a bed) at the time of booking. We can’t guarantee a double bed, but we’ll do our best to accommodate you. In some destinations, the option may be two single beds pushed together to form a ‘double’.
As most of our trips are organized on a twin-share basis, if you’ve booked with a friend, you’ll automatically be bunked into a room together — unless you pay for individual rooms. Most twin rooms have two single beds, but please let us know if you want separate beds at the time of booking so we can pass this information on to the accommodation provider.
We will try our very hardest to accommodate all dietary requirements, but in some out-of-the-way places, this can be very difficult to guarantee.
Please let us know at the time of booking of any food requirements or allergies, and we’ll pass the information onto your leader. It is also a great idea to bring a card with your dietary requirements written in the local language for those times you are eating away from the group.
Food is one of the most exciting parts of travel. While there will usually be some familiar fare, you'll also be confronted with the new, interesting and downright weird of the culinary world. We like to think of it as an adventure for all the senses!
Our flexible itineraries often allow you to eat with the group or branch out on your own, so you can eat to suit any budget or desire.
In some places, it may not be wise to drink the local water. Country-specific information is available on our destination pages.
