Italy is generally very safe for travelers, with excellent tourist infrastructure and a low violent crime rate.
However, like most popular destinations, there are a few things to remember as you travel around. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe in Italy and make the most of your trip.
Safety tips for Italy
Below are some travel safety tips for Italy:
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or on public transport
Ask your hotel about places to avoid after dark
If walking at night, stick to well-lit, populated areas
Don’t display valuables or excessive jewelry in public
If using taxis, use licensed cabs or ridesharing apps
Make your bag hard to grab by keeping it close and zipped
Have a rough idea of where you’re going before heading out – glance at your phone for directions, but don't look lost.
Is it safe to travel to Italy?
Most travelers visit Italy without any issues. However, petty crime is common – especially in big cities and tourist hotspots – and there are some local laws and seasonal weather conditions to be aware of.
Petty crime
The biggest risks are pickpocketing and bag snatching. Never leave your stuff unattended and use a bag that’s harder to grab, such as a money belt or crossbody bag. You may also want to leave expensive watches or jewelry at home.
Stay alert in busy places, major bus terminals, train stations and public transport – especially on the Circumvesuviana train between Naples and Sorrento, which is known for pickpockets. They often use distraction techniques to catch you off guard, so be mindful.
If you’re taking taxis, use licensed cabs (they have a ‘TAXI’ sign and the driver will wear an ID badge). Confirm the meter is on and check the fare beforehand to avoid scams. Rideshare apps like Free Now (more common in Italy) and Uber are available in some areas.
Begging is common in major cities. Some beggars may be part of a syndicate, meaning donations will not always reach them directly. If you’d like to contribute, consider donating to a reputable organization instead.
If you experience theft, report the incident to the police within 24 hours and ask for a statement for your travel insurance claim.
Local laws
In big cities, some vendors sell counterfeit goods. Buying from unlicensed traders is illegal, and you could be fined if caught. If a street seller approaches you, a firm ‘no, grazie’ (No, thank you) is the best response.
There are also fines for littering, eating, drinking or sitting around certain historic landmarks, such as the Spanish Steps in Rome. Ensure you look out for signage before stopping to rest.
Natural disasters
Natural disasters are rare, but it’s good to be aware of potential risks. Italy is home to three active volcanoes: Mt Etna in Sicily, Mt Stromboli on the island of Stromboli and Mt Vesuvius near Naples. While major eruptions are uncommon, volcanic activity can occasionally disrupt travel.
Venice is also prone to seasonal flooding in early winter, and wildfires can occur during summer, particularly in southern regions like Sicily and Calabria.
Solo female travellers
Solo female travelers generally find Italy safe and welcoming. However, unwanted attention such as catcalling can occur, particularly in major cities like Rome, Florence and Milan. If this happens, it’s best to ignore and walk away confidently.
