Best time to visit Arches National Park

Arches National Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is generally between May and September when the weather is ideal for hiking, camping and outdoor activities. June to August are the peak summer months, so be prepared for sizzling temperatures and larger crowds.

If you're not keen on the heat or busy trails, you could consider planning your trip in the shoulder months of April or October.

Spring (March-May)

With pleasant daytime highs of 60°F in March to 79°F in May, spring is an ideal time to explore the park's unique rock formations. The nights and mornings are still on the chilly side — especially in March, which can see lows of 34°F — so layered clothing is key. Excluding spring break, which sees a rush of visitors, the park is usually less crowded at this time of year, which means fewer people to share the trails (and the views) with.

Summer (June-August)

Summer in Southeastern Utah is hot and dry, with average highs of 100°F in July. Nights are mild with average lows of 59-66°F, but pack a light jacket as it can feel cool after sundown (especially if you're camping). July and August mark the arrival of the summer monsoon, which can bring intense afternoon thunderstorms and flash flooding.

Despite the weather, it's still the busiest time of year, particularly with families who visit during the school summer holidays. Beat the midday heat by setting off early in the morning and ensure you drink plenty of water.

Fall (September-November)

Fall brings cooler, more manageable temperatures for hiking. Daytime highs still average a toasty 86°F in September, but come October, it's a pleasant 70°F. By November, expect 55°F during the day and a cool 28°F at night. The favorable weather means the park is still on the busy side, but the crowds start thinning out come late September.

Winter (December-February)

Winter sees highs of 41-48°F and freezing overnight temps that can drop to 17°F. Despite the cold, it's a magical time to see the park's famous red rock formations dusted with snow. Plus, there are little to no crowds, so you'll get to enjoy the views in solitude.

Just note that some roads and trails close due to the weather, and no ranger programs run during the winter (they only run in spring through autumn). It's recommended to visit in the winter only if you have experience exploring in potentially icy, snowy conditions and are prepared with appropriate gear.
