Discover charming island life on a tour across Flores – Indonesia's ‘Flower Island’. On this nine-day trip, you’ll hike to Mt Kelimutu at sunrise, soak in the Mengeruda Hot Springs, visit a remote village in Wae Rebo and walk through the spiderweb rice terraces. Spend two days sailing through the Komodo Islands and hike to the top for amazing views, swim at Pink Beach and see the home of the Komodo dragon up close. Exploring one of Indonesia’s less-touristed islands, this is one adventure you’ll remember for years, taking the road less travelled and experiencing the unique culture and hospitality of Flores along the way.

Why you'll love this trip
  • Explore the Indonesian island of Flores and immerse yourself in the local culture and stunning natural surroundings.
  • Hike to the Mt Kelimutu viewpoint at sunrise and watch its dazzling red, blue and green crater lakes shift colour as the sun crests the horizon.
  • Walk through lush rainforests to the isolated village Wae Rebo. Spend a night in a traditional conical hut with the local community and experience their warm hospitality and traditional village life.
  • Sail and island hop across the Komodo National Park islands, snorkelling, swimming, island hiking and watching stunning sunsets – the perfect sailing experience.
  • Journey across Komodo Island in search of Komodo dragons – keep your eyes peeled for these prehistoric creatures wandering the landscape.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Coral Triangle Center Foundation. Donations help expand their coral restoration project and support their educational outreach activities for local schools in Nusa Penida. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Is this trip right for you?
  • There are some long travel days on this trip. We will be driving by private transport (as there are no suitable public transport options available). Some of the roads can be quite bumpy as local infrastructure development is limited. We will make stops to break up the trip and it is a good idea to read or listen to music along the way, and to bring some medication if you are prone to carsickness.
  • Accommodation in general in Flores is more basic than you would experience in Bali as tourism is still developing. There are some nights there hot shower is not available and the rooms will be multi-share. This is, of course, a small price to pay for the chance to venture off the well-beaten tourist path.
  • You will need to be a confident swimmer to participate in this trip’s included snorkelling activity. Those who don't wish to snorkel can choose to spend time on the boat or beach instead.
  • There are some included treks so good fitness and suitable footwear is required. See the itinerary for more detail.

This was a brilliant trip, seeing rural life throughout our journey across the island. Lots of unique experiences along the way. The 2 day boat trip was particularly amazing with so many activities to take part in over the 2 days. Our hike to the conical huts was sadly cancelled due to bad weather but our guide, Yan, created a brilliant alternative itinerary. We were looked after every step of the way and Yan, together with our bus driver Anus, was amazing at managing any eventualities! There are some long days of travel on some bumpy windy roads but the journeys are broken up by activities along the way. A really varied trip!

I had eight unforgettable days during the "Komodo and Flores Adventure" trip: our guide Yohanes, ten very enthusiastic travelers, the itinerary, and the weather were all in perfect harmony, as is fitting for Indonesia.

What a delightful place Flores is. People are very friendly and welcoming. The scenery is spectacularly mountainous although more arid in the west. Be prepared for long days of travel on the comfortable bus, which due to the terrain, tends to travel at 30kph outside of towns. It is noticeably less tourist focused outside of Labuan Bajo. We have recommended additional time exploring village life. Some fascinating cultural experiences along the way and the overnight stay in the large, air-conditioned boat with spectacular snorkeling made for a great way to finish off the trip. Many thanks to our caring guide Yohanes, who was focused on making the most of our time together and sorted out all the logistics behind the scenes.

Yohanes was a great leader. Long days of driving steep, twisty and narrow roads were offset by the lovely time snorkeling from the boat. We had a very enthusiastic group of fellow travellers who made the trip extra special.
